Literature review: Environment problem for Arts
This “Ten Problems for Arts in the 2020s” booklet identifies ten relevant areas from very recent contributions put forward at academic level in the form journal articles, conference proceedings and students theses. Ten freely accessible internet references have been selected for each area and direct links are provided at the end of each chapter for own consultation. Our selected references do not intend to mirror ranking indexes nor establish novel classifications. On the contrary, they are meant to represent peer-reviewed, diverse and scientifically-sound case studies for vertical dissemination aimed at non-specialist readers. They will also be able to scoop even more references through the bibliography that is reported at the end of each selected reference.
Without further ado, these are the ten problems that we are going to introduce in this booklet:
Each problem has its own dedicated chapter made of an introductory section, a short presentation of the ten selected references and a conclusions section.
The final chapter of this booklet will report the conclusions from each chapter again in order to provide a complete executive summary.
THE PROBLEM — Expectations for more frequent, widespread, and severe impacts from climate change suggest a rethinking of salient questions bearing on aesthetic experience. Our understanding and engagement with the environment are in fact intrinsic elements of the aesthetic experience. In the recent architecture, for example, a special interest in visual art and composition mechanisms is noted. A deeper understanding on the ability of the arts to help foster ecological awareness is needed.

CONCLUSIONS — Environmental aesthetics, an area of knowledge informed by philosophy and ethics, offers an important vantage point on human wellbeing in the age of climate change. When perceiving natural environments in relation to art, we are invited to enter a space in which our perception is always in movement between our cultural beliefs, the environmental conditions that affect us and the artwork. Fascination with contemplation from above seems always to have been a characteristic of human beings, which experienced a particular boost in the early twentieth century with the development of aeronautics. Experiences of artistic engagement at local level, and the commonalities that they share with the natural world, incorporate the use of art as activism. Food can be used for persuasive power by both hosts and guests who share a whole variety of etiquette rules to cajole the other, while the table is recognized as a set for public drama. It is recommended that non-traditional and experiential learning are used in environmental education programs. Environmental art design refers to a modern art form, which uses the means of art design to optimize the interior and outdoor environmental space of architectural projects. Several art practices speak in various ways to the notions of crossing borders, dissolving boundaries, making connections between diverse forms of life, inanimate objects, and local materials. Cultural heritage and resources have evolved to include environmental elements, industrial and vernacular construction, urban and rural settlements, and intangible elements related to community activities and ways of life. Environmentalists can find their voice in the public domain through the conduit of temporary outdoor sculpture events.
