Literature review: Participation problem for Arts
This “Ten Problems for Arts in the 2020s” booklet identifies ten relevant areas from very recent contributions put forward at academic level in the form journal articles, conference proceedings and students theses. Ten freely accessible internet references have been selected for each area and direct links are provided at the end of each chapter for own consultation. Our selected references do not intend to mirror ranking indexes nor establish novel classifications. On the contrary, they are meant to represent peer-reviewed, diverse and scientifically-sound case studies for vertical dissemination aimed at non-specialist readers. They will also be able to scoop even more references through the bibliography that is reported at the end of each selected reference.
Without further ado, these are the ten problems that we are going to introduce in this booklet:
Each problem has its own dedicated chapter made of an introductory section, a short presentation of the ten selected references and a conclusions section.
The final chapter of this booklet will report the conclusions from each chapter again in order to provide a complete executive summary.
THE PROBLEM — The visibility, importance, and outreach of local citizen participation via collaboration, creative innovation and promoting democratic principles must be strengthened. Participatory arts activities and live arts engagement can aid the recovery of people who experience mental health problems and protect older adults against loneliness, also in rural environments. The interaction of bodies with spaces can even be seen through the performative art framework. Places and spaces for arts engagement should be more attentive to the needs of the vulnerable parts of the population, also taking into account the contemporary concepts of “popular”, which relies heavily on sociology, and diversity.

CONCLUSIONS — The social role of creative practice is furthered by promoting community empowerment through the engagement with the public. Disruption, flux, and shifts, provoked by important current issues, move art into action. Artistic activities help people develop friendships and engage with local communities in rural locations. The art of performance is alive and artistic and can be seen in dance, theatre and installation. Frequent engagement with certain receptive arts activities and venues, particularly museums, galleries and exhibitions, may be a protective factor to prevent loneliness in older adults. The variety of musical genres is a fundamental topic for popular music studies and they require diversified methodological approaches. Experiences and voices of Roma girls have rarely been seen or heard without stereotypes, which signals a widespread issue with diversity. An inductive thematic analysis from Palestinian community creative arts groups living under military conflict captured the extreme challenges participants faced and the protective effects of the creative arts groups on wellbeing. Responsive participatory art museum practices are collaborative practices that emphasize respectful, ongoing relationships with individuals and organizations within museums’ communities. Our everyday world of cultural experience is being diminished and devalued but the arts still run through our lives like a grain through wood characterizing and strengthening us.
