Literature Review: Applications problem for Nuclear
This “Ten Problems for Nuclear in the 2020s” booklet identifies ten relevant areas from very recent contributions put forward at academic level in the form journal articles, conference proceedings and students theses. Ten freely accessible internet references have been selected for each area and direct links are provided at the end of each chapter for own consultation. Our selected references do not intend to mirror ranking indexes nor establish novel classifications. On the contrary, they are meant to represent peer-reviewed, diverse and scientifically-sound case studies for vertical dissemination aimed at non-specialist readers. They will also be able to scoop even more references through the bibliography that is reported at the end of each selected reference.
Without further ado, these are the ten problems that we are going to introduce in this booklet:

Each problem has its own dedicated chapter made of an introductory section, a short presentation of the ten selected references and a conclusions section.
The final chapter of this booklet will report the conclusions from each chapter again in order to provide a complete executive summary.
THE PROBLEM — When used safely and securely, nuclear science and technology are effective supplements or provide alternatives to conventional approaches for a wide range of peaceful applications. CONCLUSIONS — Through the International Atomic Energy Agency’s assistance, nuclear techniques are put to use in various areas, including human health, food and agriculture, the environment, water, energy, nuclear safety and security, and the preservation of artefacts. Research reactors applications include producing radiopharmaceuticals for cancer care and nuclear medicine, helping to create new materials for research and industry and training nuclear scientists and engineers. A proposed hydrogen-based energy system includes diverse facilities such as a very high temperature reactor. Proposed new facilities for production of 99Mo alone will not be sufficient to maintain adequate supply of various important medical isotopes. Artificial intelligence involves a wide range of smart techniques that are applicable to medical services including nuclear medicine. Isotopic techniques enable scientists to understand the components of the water cycle, helping them better assess the quantity, quality and sustainability of water. Nuclear desalination is the production of potable water from seawater in a facility in which a nuclear reactor is used as the source of energy for the desalination process. Big Data for Mutation Breeding, and Plant Breeding in general, concerns the phenotype as well as the genotype. The development of small and medium sized reactors would be better suited for cogeneration and would facilitate non-electric applications of nuclear energy. Robotic systems have been successfully applied in the nuclear industry for several decades as a safe approach to minimize the exposure dose of human operators.
