Literature Review: Pollution problem for Environment

This “Ten Problems for Environment in the 2020s” booklet identifies ten relevant areas from very recent contributions put forward at academic level in the form journal articles, conference proceedings and students theses. Ten freely accessible internet references have been selected for each area and direct links are provided at the end of each chapter for own consultation. Our selected references do not intend to mirror ranking indexes nor establish novel classifications. On the contrary, they are meant to represent peer-reviewed, diverse and scientifically-sound case studies for vertical dissemination aimed at non-specialist readers. They will also be able to scoop even more references through the bibliography that is reported at the end of each selected reference.

Without further ado, these are the ten problems that we are going to introduce in this booklet:

  1. policies,
  2. assessment,
  3. energy efficiency,
  4. economics,
  5. natural resources,
  6. public involvement,
  7. ecosystems,
  8. human factors,
  9. urban and rural,
  10. pollution.

Each problem has its own dedicated chapter made of an introductory section, a short presentation of the ten selected references and a conclusions section.

The final chapter of this booklet will report the conclusions from each chapter again in order to provide a complete executive summary.

10 Pollution

THE PROBLEM — Environmental pollution affects every aspect of human existence. Energy consumption increases CO2 emissions. The plastic problem can be related to almost all environmental issues. The governance of the rural environment is an urgent problem. Geoengineering, currently at preliminary research stage, is starting to be seen as a middle road between mitigation and adaptation.

CONCLUSIONS — Rather than take precaution, polluters often see the remedies as the excuse to keep polluting as long as it is affordable. Energy consumption increases CO2 emissions but innovation reduces CO2 emissions in G6 while it increases emissions in the MENA and the BRICS countries. The impact of fiscal decentralization on environmental pollution is positive and the phenomenon of race to bottom appears. Hungarian researchers and design engineers have developed a closed-loop plastic waste treatment system that can be built in a 40ft container frame and can be transported to the desired location. Environmental pollution in rural areas is hidden, difficult to detect, and difficult to clean up. Soil pollution not only affects and changes its ecological function, but also endangers the quality of agricultural products, threatens human health as well as sustainable social and economic development. Aviation’s impact on climate and the elimination of it consists one of the most challenging tasks for the sector to accomplish. Research into the possibilities of developing geoengineering technologies is gaining new momentum. The concern that solar geoengineering would harmfully lessen abatement of greenhouse gas emissions is widespread. Despite the widespread knowledge gaps, it was possible to provide an evaluation of eight illustrative marine geoengineering approaches.
