Literature Review: Knowledge problem for Philosophy

This “Ten Problems for Philosophy in the 2020s” booklet identifies ten relevant areas from very recent contributions put forward at academic level in the form journal articles, conference proceedings and students’ theses. Ten freely accessible internet references have been selected for each area and direct links are provided at the end of each chapter for own consultation. Our selected references do not intend to mirror ranking indexes nor establish novel classifications. On the contrary, they are meant to represent peer-reviewed, diverse and scientifically-sound case studies for vertical dissemination aimed at non-specialist readers. They will also be able to scoop even more references through the bibliography that is reported at the end of each selected reference.

Without further ado, these are the ten problems that we are going to introduce in this booklet:

  1. religion,
  2. knowledge,
  3. logic,
  4. nature,
  5. mind,
  6. moral,
  7. experience,
  8. identity,
  9. political,
  10. science.

Each problem has its own dedicated chapter made of an introductory section, a short presentation of the ten selected references and a conclusions section.

The final chapter of this booklet will report the conclusions from each chapter again in order to provide a complete executive summary.

2 Knowledge

THE PROBLEM — Everything that is known by human beings is known from a human point of view. Attempts to incorporate empirical methods into philosophy are not new. A model of partial overlaps may acknowledge similarities and differences between knowledge systems. Information is not only a matter of semantic but also an epistemic prerequisite for the establishment of knowledge.

CASE STUDIES — … buy this booklet from Amazon …

CONCLUSIONS — Knowledge implies truth: if something is known, it is true. The art of discovering breakthrough knowledge in the age of Google involves writing web-based syntheses using interactive tools like online search engines and online databases. Some philosophers who are opponents of scientism would consider a methodological shift from the armchair to the laboratory to be potentially disastrous to the future of philosophy as a field of inquiry. The set of ocular metaphors of which illumination is a part still has an important place in ordinary language, but can no longer provide for a philosophical theory of knowledge. Questions on the nature and limits of knowledge need to be prioritized in political science education. Applied ethnobiology raises complex theoretical questions about the integration of heterogeneous knowledge systems. Library and information science is a discipline that not only deals with knowledge alone but rather takes care of the content that we understand as meaningful data. Borges’ short stories function as serious thought experiments that illustrate the counter-intuitive nature of the reality. Both the Ijmali theory and the Recasting theory of Islamization of knowledge are not feasible in the present world. Epistemicide happens when globalizing West-centric discourses and practices dominate non-Western societies.
