Literature Review: Nature problem for Philosophy

This “Ten Problems for Philosophy in the 2020s” booklet identifies ten relevant areas from very recent contributions put forward at academic level in the form journal articles, conference proceedings and students’ theses. Ten freely accessible internet references have been selected for each area and direct links are provided at the end of each chapter for own consultation. Our selected references do not intend to mirror ranking indexes nor establish novel classifications. On the contrary, they are meant to represent peer-reviewed, diverse and scientifically-sound case studies for vertical dissemination aimed at non-specialist readers. They will also be able to scoop even more references through the bibliography that is reported at the end of each selected reference.

Without further ado, these are the ten problems that we are going to introduce in this booklet:

  1. religion,
  2. knowledge,
  3. logic,
  4. nature,
  5. mind,
  6. moral,
  7. experience,
  8. identity,
  9. political,
  10. science.

Each problem has its own dedicated chapter made of an introductory section, a short presentation of the ten selected references and a conclusions section.

The final chapter of this booklet will report the conclusions from each chapter again in order to provide a complete executive summary.

4 Nature

THE PROBLEM — Philosophy of nature aims to make sense of life’s purpose on earth and how life fits into the universe.  Interdisciplinary perspectives can be facilitated by a unifying framework with dialectics of nature. The emergence of new fields is being driven by high-throughput data generation technologies and the transfer of modeling techniques from other fields.

CONCLUSIONS — In order to avoid philosophical stagnation, it is critical to be able to connect the perspectives of the philosophy of nature with empirical studies. There are great differences between the Chinese Dialectics of Nature and the Western Philosophy of Science and Technology. The cosmological relevance of the emptiness of the universe is not yet sufficiently appreciated in natural philosophy. Phenomena from different areas of human experience can be reduced to, that is, mapped onto the same abstract essence. New and emerging views are characterized by different philosophies of nature, that is by different ontological and methodological assumptions and epistemic values and virtues. Anthropocene reverses the problem of Nature philosophy into explaining the ‘active’, that is, by the potency of willing. Philosophers of nature work out what the “real message” of scientific work means in its broader implications concerning our niche in nature. Art is the conceptual mediator that holds together a morphological determination of nature and a technical determination of art. Thinkers with environmental concerns have sought to derive favorable ethical prescriptions resisting the reduction of the human being to the status of a mere mode among modes. Schelling argues that two opposed yet interdependent metaphysical powers are necessary to the constitution of the world, and he interprets these powers in terms of a gendered polarity.
