Literature Review: Authenticity problem for Social Sciences

This “Ten Problems for Social Sciences in the 2020s” booklet identifies ten relevant areas from very recent contributions put forward at academic level in the form journal articles, conference proceedings and students’ theses. Ten freely accessible internet references have been selected for each area and direct links are provided at the end of each chapter for own consultation. Our selected references do not intend to mirror ranking indexes nor establish novel classifications. On the contrary, they are meant to represent peer-reviewed, diverse and scientifically-sound case studies for vertical dissemination aimed at non-specialist readers. They will also be able to scoop even more references through the bibliography that is reported at the end of each selected reference.

Without further ado, these are the ten problems that we are going to introduce in this booklet:

  1. interculturalism,
  2. introspection,
  3. truth,
  4. authenticity,
  5. human enhancement,
  6. critical thinking,
  7. technocracy,
  8. privilege,
  9. ethics,
  10. higher education.

Each problem has its own dedicated chapter made of an introductory section, a short presentation of the ten selected references and a conclusions section.

The final chapter of this booklet will report the conclusions from each chapter again in order to provide a complete executive summary.

4 Authenticity

THE PROBLEM — In modern era, requirements of new habits and pressures create an increasing threat to well-being. The presentation of authentic selves is more challenging when such a self is dissonant with dominant societal norms or accepted conventions. It is only in recent years that there has been empirical research into the correlates of authenticity.

CONCLUSIONS — Rooted in self-determination theory, sense of authentic inner-compass refers to the perception that we have self-guiding values, aspirations, and goals. Eudaimonia is a kind of psychological well-being that can be equated to positive functioning. Despite growing interest in authentic leadership, the construct still embodies several criticisms. Authenticity, specifically the self-alienation subscale, is able to predict mindfulness. Higher levels of authenticity are associated with higher levels of happiness and lower levels of perceived stress. Public stigma and quality of life are indirectly related through internalized stigma, authenticity, and self-compassion. People experience greater anxiety and instrumentality when they cater to another person’s preferences than when they behave authentically. Instagram influencers need to appear authentic, yet also approach their followers in a strategic way to remain appealing to advertisers. The ability to come across as authentic is what distinguishes popular content creators from the multitude of others. Authenticity is considered a key motivational driver for prospective tourists within tourism destinations and has an immediate effect on return visitor intentions.
